Two years after the special-ops FBI team disbanded and Jane Doe (Jamie Alexander)—the mystery woman with enigmatic tattoos and no memory—went into hiding to protect her teammates, she returns with a whole new web of ultraviolet tattoos, setting off a new investigation. Kurt (Sullivan Stapleton) is back as team leader but now Edgar (Rob Brown) is the FBI assistant director, unit commander Tasha (Audrey Esparza) is a CIA operative, and computer genius and forensic expert Patterson (Ashley Johnson) is a tech millionaire with a hugely popular app. The new villain is Jane's foster brother Roman (Luke Mitchell), who works his way into the trust of a billionaire (David Morse) with a plan to stop all wars (but at what cost to freedom?). There are personal conflicts, secrets, and melodramatic twists, most notably a grown daughter who Jane doesn't even remember giving birth to (another legacy of her manipulative adoptive mother). Ennis Esmer joins the team as cheeky hacker Rich Dotcom (previously a recurring role) and Bill Nye (playing himself) appears as Patterson's father, supplying some welcome comic relief. The series delivers some great action scenes, and a couple episodes play cleverly with timelines and storytelling conventions, but in the realm of high-concept action TV, this elaborate conspiracy is more in line with those hatched by comic book supervillains. Compiling all 22 episodes from the 2017-18 third season, extras include a behind-the-scenes featurette, deleted scenes, and a gag reel. A strong optional purchase. (S. Axmaker)
